CIS 120 Proficiency
Exam – Syllabus
Note: The CIS 120
Proficiency exam is a 2-part test covering any 2 of
the 3 Microsoft Office applications:
Access, Excel and Word. To pass
the proficiency exam, you must select 2 applications on which to test and pass
each test with a minimum of 80%.

1. Retrieving a Database
2. Editing Table Records: Adding records, deleting records, changing records
3. Browsing database contents
4. Saving a Database
5. Locating Records, Replacing records
6. Creating, Saving and Executing Queries – this is the bulk of the test
· Specifying criteria to filter query results
· Creating Totals Queries
· Creating new fields in query results based on existing data fields
· Working with dates in Queries – this includes using date functions and formatting dates
· Modifying field values via Queries
7. Creating and Modifying Reports – this is also a significant part of the test
· Using a saved query as a report source
· Selecting fields for the report
· Grouping the report based on the value of a report field
· Formatting report fields
· Producing subtotals, averages, and grand totals on reports
