Perhaps the most exciting aspect of science is that discoveries are made every day. These discoveries can have worldwide implications, and, now more than ever, scientists are assuming prominent roles in transitioning their results to the realm of technology to improve the human condition. Accordingly, there is increasing need for a broad liberal arts basis in the education of 21st-century scientists. At Dominican University, the Department of Natural Sciences takes a multifaceted approach to the study of science. The student may choose from four majors: biology, chemistry, biology-chemistry and environmental science. Science classes are small, allowing students to work closely with professors, whether helping with research projects or gaining assistance in complex technical procedures. Dominican’s well-rounded liberal-arts curriculum aids science students by developing their communication skills and by helping them understand the societal impact that science has, while at the same time, giving them the practical knowledge and experience necessary to have a successful career in their chosen field. The Chemistry MajorThe chemistry major offers an array of challenging and exciting classes and laboratory work. The small class size with constant studentteacher interaction has signifi cant impact for chemistry majors, as only one of the required classes does not include laboratory work. Students must take at least fi ve of the required chemistry classes at Dominican. |
