Why Study Engineering In The Joint Program At Dominican University?

Dominican University and Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) offer a joint engineering program. This program represents a powerful combination of innovative professional preparation and a broad liberal-arts education. IIT’s reputation for cutting-edge scientific inquiry and graduate-style education is enhanced by Dominican’s rigorous liberal-arts curriculum.

Students in this program acquire skills that set them apart from other engineering students in their communication and social skills, their flexibility, and their adaptability to changing environments. According to a recent survey, CEOs and human resource managers are looking for three clusters of skills developed through the liberal arts:

  • Cognitive—problem-solving, critical thinking and ability to learn
  • Presentational—oral and written communication
  • Social—ability to work with others, especially intercultural interaction

What Degrees Can Be Earned?

Students in the engineering program earn a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics, mathematics and computer science, or chemistry from Dominican University (depending on the chosen engineering specialization). In addition, students earn a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering from IIT. Seven engineering programs are available at IIT: aerospace, architectural, chemical, civil, computer, electrical and mechanical engineering.

How Does The Program Work?

The regular length of the program is five years. During the first three or four semesters of enrollment, students take all courses including mathematics, physics, chemistry and computer programming plus foundation and core courses at Dominican University. During the sophomore year, students apply to the joint program at IIT as part-time students. After admission to the program, students take courses at both IIT and at Dominican University. Students register for engineering classes at both Dominican University and IIT and have full-time status at Dominican University for every term they are enrolled in the joint engineering program. While enrolled in the program, students are subject to the academic and general regulations and policies of both Dominican University and IIT.

The program is structured so students may live on the campus of Dominican University for all five years, spreading out their liberal-arts core requirements. All engineering courses are offered at IIT’s main campus in Chicago; some are also offered at IIT’s Rice Campus in Wheaton.

Are Scholarships Available?

Students in the Dominican University/IIT program receive scholarships and financial aid through Dominican University. Academic scholarships are determined upon admission and are renewed for up to four years as long as the student makes satisfactory academic progress.

Are Internships Available?

IIT provides a wide array of internship and co-op opportunities with leading corporations and firms throughout the Chicago area and nationwide.
