Major

Information technology (IT) plays an increasingly important role in all organizations today. IT professionals work in all industries developing, maintaining and enhancing the technology infrastructure for the organization. A degree in IT will prepare students to take on a variety of IT roles including network administration, systems administration, computer security, hardware and software support, and end user support.

Major Requirements

A Bachelor of Arts degree in Information Technology requires that a student successfully complete the following courses:

  • CPSC 155 Computer Programming
  • CPSC 165 Computer Programming II - Data Structures
  • CPSC 244 Computer Networks
  • CPSC 299 Service Learning
  • CPSC 325 Database Organization and Design
  • CPSC 3xx Information Technology and Its Management
  • CPSC 431 Operating Systems
  • CPSC 434 Principles of UNIX
  • CPSC 445 LAN Administration
  • CPSC 4xx Network Security
  • English 336 Writing at Work
  • Either one of the following Communications courses:
    • CAS 250 Interpersonal Communication
    • CAS 320 Organization Communication and Behavior
  • Either one of the following courses:
    • CPSC 455 Internship
    • CPSC 471 Senior Project
  • Any two of the following electives:
    • CPSC 275 Windows Based Application Development
    • CPSC 361 Computer Architecture
    • CPSC 380 Web Development
    • CPSC 461 Advanced topics in Computer Science

At least seven of the computer science courses required for the major must be completed at Dominican University.

Some computer science courses are not offered every year. It is strongly recommended that a student who plans to major in Information Technology consult with a faculty member of that department as early as possible in his or her college career.
