Major/Minor

The nutrition and dietetics major prepares students for careers in the diverse field of nutrition. Completion of the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education (CADE) requirements provides eligibility for a dietetic internship and registered dietitian status. Majors in nutrition and dietetics may eventually hold such positions as nutritionist, dietitian, food service manager and consumer service representatives in business, industry or healthcare.

Major Requirements
• Nutrition Sciences 140, 200, 250, 290, 345, 375, 390, 404, 407, 408, 409 and 425
• Biology 252, 160
• Chemistry 101 and 104

A minimum of fifteen hours in the major field must be completed at Dominican.
It is advisable for interested freshmen to consult with an advisor in the department prior to registration and to take Chemistry 101, 104 and English 101, 102 in the freshman year.
Majors in nutrition and dietetics may elect to earn the Bachelor of Science degree or the Bachelor of Arts degree.
Major requirements are the same for both degrees.

Minor Requirements
• Nutrition Sciences 200, 250 and 425
• Electives to complete a total of eighteen to twenty-four semester hours selected in consultation with a nutrition sciences advisor.

A minimum of nine hours in the major field must be completed at Dominican.

The American Dietetic Association program is currently granted accreditation status by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education (CADE), a specialized accrediting body recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) board.
Nutrition and dietetics majors may complete the American Dietetic Association program requirements in addition to the major.

Certificate
The program offers a certificate to those holding a baccalaureate degree and completing only the American Dietetic Association requirements. In addition, a student may complete a second degree. These programs are administered by the Nutrition Sciences department.

 

Integrated Dietetic/MBA Health Care Demonstration Program

Admission is open to those who hold a bachelor’s degree in Business, Nutrition or a related field with an appropriate general education component from an accredited institution. The admission committee bases its decision on the applicant’s total academic and professional history and potential. Admission materials must include:

  • An adequate GPA
  • Two references from the applicant’s professors and/or supervisors
  • A one page statement from student indicating their career interests and goals
  • Satisfactory scores on the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT)

A student may be provisionally accepted if all admission requirements are met except the submission of acceptable GMAT scores. The applicant must submit a letter requesting provisional acceptance along with all other admission documents. A student who is accepted provisionally may take classes through the candidacy period, but is expected to submit acceptable scores by the end of this designated period.

Prerequisite Courses

College level courses in Anatomy, Physiology, Inorganic Chemistry and Organic Chemistry, and Microbiology.

A biochemistry course (Chem. 260 or equivalent) and normal nutrition and metabolism (NUTR 250) must have been taken within 10 years prior to beginning the program, or will be added as part of the Integrated Program.

Foundation Courses

It is expected that students will complete the following foundation courses as prerequisites to the MBA/Supervised practice course sequence or demonstrate equivalent competencies have been previously met. From one to six of the MBA foundation courses may be waived if undergraduate equivalent courses were taken and students provide grade demonstrating adequate mastery of work to move to graduate level Business courses.
