Attention all KaZaA users,
Over the past few weeks, the file-sharing utility know as KaZaA has been all over the news. In case you are not aware, when KaZaA is installed on your system there is an end user license agreement that comes up. Near the end of that agreement is the following:
“You hereby grant [Brilliant Digital Entertainment] the right to access and use the unused computing power and storage space on your computer/s and/or Internet access or bandwidth for the aggregation of content and use in distributed computing. The user acknowledges and authorizes this use without the right of compensation.”
What this means is that by accepting the license agreement and installing KaZaA, you give Brilliant Digital Entertainment the right to use your excess hard drive space, processor cycles, and Internet bandwidth however they see fit. The last line clearly states that if something should go wrong and your computer is damaged or data is lost due to their software, you have no legal recourse because you clicked “Yes” to the EULA (End User License Agreement).
As is well known on campus, access to KaZaA and other file swapping services have been blocked. While it is believed that blocking KaZaA will also block the Brilliant Digital Entertainment network, since the service is not yet online there is no way to tell for sure. As a precaution, it is recommended that if you have ever installed KaZaA on your computer that you check for an application called “b3d Projector”. To do this, run Start | Settings | Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs. On the Install/Uninstall tab, scroll through the list of programs to see if you can find the “b3d Projector” program. If you find that program on your PC, then you have the Brilliant software. The following link will help you if you wish to remove the software from your PC:

While we are not requiring that you remove either the Brilliant or KaZaA software from your PC, it is highly recommended that you do so.
Thank you for your time.
