ACCESSING YOUR DOMINICAN E-MAIL USING HOTMAIL
Need to
check your Dominican e-mail from off-campus?
We recommend you sign up for a Hotmail
account, which is one of many methods available on the Internet that gives you
free email access, along with the ability to check your other e-mail services
remotely. Even it you don't choose Hotmail,
the settings we mention later in this document are the same settings you should
use for any Internet-based service that allows you to check another e-mail
account.
To sign up
for Hotmail, you must have your own
Internet access from home. Go to
the following address: http://www.hotmail.com:

Click on Sign Up. You will then be taken to the Hotmail registration page to sign up for a new Hotmail account:

After filling in all of the requested information, click the Submit button at the bottom of the screen. If everything is okay, you will get an acknowledgement screen similar to this:

After clicking the Continue at Hotmail button, you will be brought to a use agreement screen. Scroll all the way to the button and click I Accept. You will next be prompted to sign up for a fee-based account. Scroll past this information (unless you want the fee-based account), and find the prompt towards the bottom of the screen to enable a free account:

There will also be other screens regarding e-mail based subscriptions
that you must look over.
From this point on, when you access Hotmail,
you will login with your Hotmail user
account and password:

Enter your own sign-in name and password and click on Sign in. (If you are in a lab, you should consider clicking the Public/shared computer option under Security Options in the screen above.) You will then be taken to the Hotmail home screen, shown below:

You will be able to access your Hotmail e-mail by clicking the Inbox tab at the top of the preceding screen:

You now have
a Hotmail account set up, but the next step you must take is to ensure
that Hotmail will also be able to access your Dominican e-mail account.
This involves a few simple set-up procedures.
First, click on the Options tab at the top of the screen (to the right of the Address Book tab). This will lead to the following screen:

Right under the Additional Options column, you will see a link for POP Mail Retrieval Settings. Click on that link, and you will see the screen below:

Hotmail allows you to set up four separate POP accounts.
You will have to check with your other Internet service providers for
appropriate information to fill in for them.
To access your Dominican e-mail, be
sure to type in the settings given below!
|
POP Server Name: |
email.dom.edu |
|
POP User Name: |
Your Dominican University User Name, followed by a dot, then internet.educ.rosary afterwards. For user rjohnson we therefore typed in the following: rjohnson.internet.educ.rosary |
|
POP User Password: |
Your Dominican
University E-mail Password |
Leave the Server Timeout and Port Number setting as they appear, but you should make sure you
place a check in the option to Leave
messages on POP server. If you
do not place a check here, any Dominican e-mail messages you read while
in Hotmail will be deleted
from the Dominican e-mail server. You
should also leave the Download new
messages only option checked.
When you're finished filling this out, scroll down to the bottom of the screen and click the OK button. Hotmail will return to its main page. Once again, you must click the Inbox tab. At your Inbox, you will not notice any immediate difference from what you saw before:
In order for Hotmail to access your Dominican e-mail, you must now click the Pop Mail link that appears at the far right of the screen, under the Hotmail Services column. As soon as you click that link, Hotmail will retrieve any New messages you have in your Dominican e-mail account:

Notice the difference from the previous screen shot? You have now retrieved your Dominican e-mail!
|
Please note this method of accessing your Dominican e-mail from off-campus is only good for accessing your New Dominican e-mail. Dominican e-mail folders, copies to self, etc., will not work within Hotmail. |
If you've
been logged into Hotmail for awhile,
you may want to periodically click the Pop
Mail link on the right side of the screen.
This will re-check the Dominican mail server for any new messages since
your initial login.

If you have questions about this procedure, feel free to contact Ken Black, Director of Teaching and Learning Technology, at ext. 6512.
