Course
Description:
An analysis of the techniques of economic decision making and their relation to business enterprise. Managerial models and applications are investigated and tested. Emphasis upon recent managerial thought. This course will satisfy the social science core area requirement.
Course
Objectives:
1. Reinforce the microeconomic models of supply and demand, consumer behavior and firm behavior.
2. Illustrate how microeconomic principles are implemented by management to strengthen corporate direction.
3. Advance the knowledge of firm competitive strategies.
4. Broaden the scope of how economic ideas translate into management strategy, utilizing quantitative and analytical methods, as well as critical thinking skills, in business application.
5. Develop communication skills, both verbal and non-verbal, of knowledge of concepts.
Coursework:
Homework will be assigned weekly, and will come from problems in the textbook. In addition to these assignments, there will be case studies assigned which will pertain to relevant issues in the course, as well as expound on the material. Each student will be providing at least one presentation during the semester on a case study. There will be two exams. The first exam will be a review of the principles of Microeconomics as covered in the first five chapters of the text. The second exam will be a comprehensive final exam to be given during finals week.
Grading:
Final grades will be determined on the basis of performance on the course work with the following weights attached to each section:
Mid-Term Exam 20%
Homework 10%
Cases 20%
Presentation 10%
Final Exam 40%
Grades are calculated as:
A 100%-90%
B 89.9%-80%
C 79.9%-70%
D 69.9%-60%
F Below 60%
Plus and minuses will be used at the discretion of the professor based upon, but not limited to, course improvement and attendance.
Attendance:
Attendance will not be taken, but attendance is required in order to stay current with the course. This course utilizes the textbook for its structure, but case studies and lectures will deviate from the textbook and students will be responsible for any topic covered in the course of a lecture.
