- Primary readings: Justinian - Corpus Juris Civilis - In order to compare to "barbarian" law codes we will read for the following week. Just get a sense of how it's organized. Think about how it differs from Hammurabi. You should dedicate just 20 minutes to this.
- Procopius - The Secret History. Skim the first 18 chapters or so in order to figure out what's going on here. Come to class with answers for the following questions (no need to print this out, but you'll need to do some reading).
- What are the types of criticisms that Procopius levels at the elites of Constantinople?
- Given that you read for Reading Response 4 documents praising Justinian and his court by Procopius, how do you make sense of the different approaches?
- What kinds of accusations seem credible? What seems unlikely to be true?
- You'll find information on Justinian and Procopius in Bennett, so pay attention.
- The Sunnah. (traditions of the Prophet Muhammad), excerpts. Print out.

- Read - The Miracles of Thomas of Norwich (1173) and The Black Death and the Jews (1348-49). Note that the first is several hundred years before the Black Death, but I want you to read both, then write a 500-word essay on the following question. Why do medieval Christians blame Jews for calamaties? What do these acts of violence and prejudice reveal to us, as historians, about how medieval Christians and Jews perceived their world and each other?
