You will then be required to write an essay of approximately 3000 words that demonstrates your mastery of the content and your ability to assess the content along the lines of our major course concepts (presented on the second day of class).
- Due 12/17 by 5:00 P.M.
- Selection: Choose your source. Done in class, Tuesday, 11/2.
- Possession: Come to class with your book so that I know you have it. Due Thursday, 11/11.
- Summary:
- This is a graded assignment that counts for 25% of your final paper grade. You must produce a 1500-word (minimum) summary of your primary source that demonstrates your mastery of its content and character. This is descriptive writing that shows me you've read it and are ready to move forward to more complex thinking. The summary does not need to take essay format, but may instead be a narrative outline or any other structure that you like.
- Due 11/30 via MyDU
- Outline: Over Thanksgiving break, think about your paper, now that you know your book. Your assignment is to write an essay that explores the core themes of our course - the intersection of violence and religion, and the consequences of that intersection - as seen through the lens of your source.
- What does it reveal about the ways that religion inspires people to violence or to peace?
- What elements of cultural interaction or misunderstanding do you see?
- How does the nature of the source - author, audience, subject matter, genre, etc. - shape its message?
- Your assignment here is to construct an outline of your paper that includes a thesis statement/paragraph, notations on how you intend to organize the work, and the bibliography. This document stands in lieu of a first draft, so work hard on it and provide as much detail as possible. Due Thursday, 12/2. via MyDU
- Final Paper - A paper of at least 1500 words exploring what this book reveals about the Silk Road. It must be a thesis-driven essay in which the analysis is supported by the primary document.
- Due 12/17 at 5:00 P.M. via MyDU
