For Monday:

Go home. Ok, so if you can't go home, imagine going home.

I want you to write one page (at least 300 words) describing your community as if you were an outsider visiting it. Let's review the core questions:

  1. How does group membership affect identity?
  2. What are the causes and effects of inequality between and within groups?
  3. What does it mean to live in a diverse community?

And then let's revisit the core questions of this particular class

  1. What do travelers, outsiders, see in the communities that they visit that an insider might miss?
  2. What do travelers learn about themselves and their home communities by traveling to other places?
  3. Ultimately - how does one's own identity change by seeing how others construct their identities?

So pretend you are from somewhere else (define that somewhere else - it could be one of the places you visited in your own travelogue) and that you have come to visit "your community" (which you need to define). Write that travel narrative. What do you see? What don't you see? Describe the community and try to engage with the core questions. How do people in this "foreign" place construct their own identity?
