Eirik’s Saga

  1. How does the portrayal of Eirik differ in this text?
  2. In this text we see mentions of slaves. What roles does slavery seem to play in Nordic society?
  3. How does marriage seem to work? What is the status of women both inside and outside marriage?
  4. Discuss the prophecy. Does anything about the episode seem particularly odd?
  5. What is the role of religion in this narrative? How does it differ from the other? Why do you think?
  6. How does the supernatural interact with the world in this text?
  7. The long attempts to find Vinland in the expedition of Karlsefni is fleshed out to a much greater extent in this saga. What do we learn about how such an expedition worked, or didn’t work? Include issues of internal organization and interactions with the Skraelings.
  8. Does the "Uniped" episode undermine the whole text? How do we deal with such a thing? (Compare the death of Thorvald in each).

Based on this text, what do we know about Viking society? What don't we know?
