Javier Carmona was born in 1972, in Guanajuato, Mexico and became a U.S. citizen in 2001. Working in narrative media, Carmona heads the photography curriculum at Dominican University as associate professor. His recent solo exhibitions include Galería La Masmédula in Mexico City and Tres50 Espacio Cultural in Chiapas. His work was featured in the first volume of Contemporary Chicana and Chicano Art. Carmona received his MFA from the University of New Mexico in 1997 with an emphasis in photography and art history. In 1994 he graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago with a BFA. Often asked about his preoccupation with pugilism, Carmona reluctantly volunteers a formative involvement with the practice. He advocates boxing's potential for sensual influence in lectures and classroom experiences. |
