All assignments
and tests must be done individually. Do
not copy another person’s work. Do not share your solution files with anyone
else. If you are caught copying or sharing homework assignments or tests, you
will receive zero points as a grade. During class, however, you are encouraged
to assist your classmates. As Dominican’s Undergraduate Bulletin explains, “[s]tudents of the university must conduct themselves in
accordance with the highest standards of academic honesty and integrity.
Failure to maintain academic integrity will not be tolerated.”
Your final grade for this course will be calculated
based on your performance in 3 areas: Tests, Homework (assignments, online
tutorials & Web safaris), and Class Participation (class exercises &
attendance).

All
class files (application guides, examples used in a class, assignments passed
out in class, and other course-related material) will be placed this course
session’s myDU site. I will show you how to access
the information during the first class. The advantage to using myDU is that it is Web-based; you do not have to be on
campus to access the site.
If you are a
registered student for this course, you will automatically have access to the
course in myDU.
In
addition to being present in class, this includes being on-time and ready to
work for each class and working diligently on the hands-on activities during
our class sessions. If you are regularly late, unprepared to work, or absent,
your class performance grade will suffer.
·
A sign-in sheet
is distributed at the beginning of each class session. If for some reason you cannot attend, you must
contact me to request an excused absence. It is recommended that you
come to class regularly to get a good grade.
·
Class
participation is part of your grade and credit is given based on the class
exercises you submit. Class exercises are completed during regularly scheduled
class time. No make-up
exercises are offered.
Homework
includes weekly assignments and online tutorials plus the occasional Web safari.
·
All assignments
are due at the beginning of class (6:00 p.m.) on the date due. Late submission
of assignments will be assessed a penalty of 20%. Late homework will be
accepted only until the beginning of the next class (6:00 p.m.) No assignments will be accepted
after the beginning (6:00 pm) of the next class. This penalty does not
apply if you have a genuine excuse and have contacted me before the due date to
request an extension. Having
missed class when we covered the material on the assignment is not, by itself,
an acceptable excuse for turning in late work.
·
All assignments
require a printout and an electronic copy submitted via myDU.
Paper copies of assignments not turned in during class should be brought to
class the following week. You
will not receive credit for any assignments missing either the printout or the
file.
·
All files
required for the class assignments are accessed via myDU
(see below).
There
will be three major tests during the course, covering Word, Excel, and Access.
·
Test dates will
be confirmed at least a week in advance.
·
A test must be
taken on the day it is scheduled. No make-up tests are offered. If for some reason you cannot
attend class on a test day, you must contact me beforehand to schedule a time
to take the test early.
Because
course files and information are available online, you CAN do your classwork
from your own personal computer, or really from anywhere, as long as you have an
Internet connection and Microsoft Office along with Windows Live Movie Maker installed
on that computer. Office 2010 and Windows 7 are what we’ll be using in our
class sessions. Also, importantly, these are the versions of the software that
your test will use, so it is in your best interest to do your assignments and
practice using these versions so you’ll be thoroughly familiar with what you’ll
see on the screen!
There are several other versions of Office—a really
old one called Office 2003, another outdated version called Office 2007, and
Macintosh versions called Office 2008 and Office
2011. There are even some Office-like programs such as
the free OpenOffice.org and
Microsoft’s own Microsoft Works. While each of these
programs might seem very similar on the surface, there are several very
significant variations in the user interface and functionality that may cause
unneeded confusion. As a result, if you don’t have Office 2010, you should
consider purchasing a copy. Discounted student versions of Office 2010
Professional are available at http://www.varsitybuys.com and http://www.microsoft.com/student.
