Course Description

This course provides an overview of collection development and management functions in libraries and information centers. The evaluation and selection of materials in all formats will be discussed, and methods for managing print, digital, and multimedia collections will be examined. Publishing trends and emerging information product formats will also be studied.

Course Objectives

After completing the course, students will be able to:

• describe principles and practices of collection development and management

• demonstrate an understanding of needs assessment in relation to collection development

• utilize tools and techniques for evaluating and selecting print, electronic and multimedia resources for libraries and information centers

• describe methods of collection assessment

• discuss the roles and functions of library consortia in relation to collection management

• discuss legal issues involved in the creation, distribution, and use of materials by libraries and information centers

• describe publishing trends and their impact on the development and management of library and information center collections
