Course Schedule

 

Course Description

 

         International Business is a survey and analysis course.  It will expose students to factors that can impact business in the international marketplace, and examine methodology for managing business in that environment.  The course will utilize the assigned textbook for general reading and will be augmented with selected essays to highlight specific topics.  The course is structured to draw on current events, exercises and guest speakers to balance theory against practical application.  Students will draft considered opinions on significant issues related to international business, and profile a selected country with the goal of identifying business opportunities, or research an industry, organization or issue connected to international business.

 

 

 

Course Objectives

 

         At the completion of this course, students should

                   -understand terms of art used in international business

                   -appreciate the cultural, ethical, legal and political factors that impact 

                   the conduct of international business

                   -understand the history of international trade and economic activity

                   -be aware of the relative standing of national and regional economies

                   throughout the world

-understand the effect of international organizations on
business activity
-recognize international business strategies and operating methods

-identify and be able to critically analyze and synthesize issues of global concern

Course Assignments and Evaluation

 

         Participation: 20%

                   -regular attendance, engaged attitude expressed through discussion of

course material in general, during exercises, and particularly in response to presentations by guest speakers and fellow students

 

         Quizzes: 10%

                   regular quizzes based on text readings

 

         Essay Analyses: 15%

                   -read, consider and prepare comments on essays to enable

                   participation in meaningful discussion

                   -lead analysis discussion of one or more essays; approximately

                   twenty minutes

 

         Issue Papers: 30%

                   -draft two essays on selected issues related to international business

                   -papers; seven to ten pages

                   -group discussion and opinion exchange; sixty minutes

 

Country Profile and Business Opportunity Analysis or
Research Project: 25%

-comprehensive analysis of assigned country and business opportunities, or developed research on an industry, organization or issue related to international business

                   -paper; ten to fifteen pages

                   -presentation; thirty minutes

 

 

 

General Information

        

         -Arrive at class on time and silence all cellular phones and pagers.

 

         -Come to class prepared; bring textbook, readings and assignments when

         scheduled.  Be conversant in material and issues scheduled for each class

         meeting.

 

-Complete reading assignments before class, and stay abreast of current events by reading reputable newspapers and periodicals such as the Financial Times, the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the Economist, or Foreign Policy.

 

-Participate actively and relevantly in class, ask questions and test thoughts   and ideas.  Respect each other’s work by actively listening and engaging in meaningful discussion when presentations are made to the class.

 

          -All written assignments will be evaluated on content as well as writing quality. Assignments must be typed with a readable font and double spaced.

        

-Circumstances may require adjustments to the syllabus and to the    schedule.
