Dominican Men’s Soccer Receives NCAA Tournament Bid
For the fourth time in as many years, the Dominican University men’s soccer program (17-1-1) received an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III National Tournament.
The Stars found out early Monday morning that they will be hosting three teams for the first and second rounds of the National Tournament on Saturday, November 12 and Sunday, November 13.
The first round of the tournament kicks off at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday with Macalester College (13-4-2) of St. Paul, Minn., matching up with North Park University (11-6-1), the winners of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW). The tournament committee has paired the Stars with the winner of the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) Loras College (16-3-1). That game will begin one half-hour after the conclusion of the first game. The winners of both games will advance to the second round of the tournament to be played on Sunday, November 13, at 1:00 p.m. on Dominican’s West Campus Field.
“Being selected by the NCAA as a host site for the National Tournament is a great honor for the university,” said Barbara Bolich, Director of Athletics. “It truly reflects the respect that our men’s soccer team has earned as well as the excitement that surrounds our men’s soccer facilities.”
The at-large bid was the fourth such bid for the Stars since becoming eligible for NCAA post-season in 2002. In those four years, the Stars have posted a 3-3 record in the National Tournament, making their best run in 2003 when they advanced all the way to the Elite Eight with victories over Fontbonne University in penalty kicks, Denison University 2-1 and John Carroll University 2-0 before falling to the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh 1-0.

Children's Christmas Party Volunteers
Needed
I
know you may be gearing up for Halloween, but the Office of Alumnae/i and
Parent Relations is already hard at work planning the 22nd Annual Children’s Christmas Party.
The Dominican University Alumnae/i Association will host this annual
celebration Saturday, December 3, 2005
from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. here on campus.
This
event attracts more than 400 alumnae/i, faculty, staff and their children for
Christmas crafts, games, carols and of course a visit from Santa Claus. This
year’s festivities also include a live production of the nativity story and
storytelling with Therese Hogan ’79.
We
are looking for volunteers
– alumnae/i, faculty, staff, Sisters and students – to help host and
staff the games, crafts and entertainment at the event. Volunteers are needed to
help with set-up, check-in, games, crafts, photos with Santa Claus and other
duties as needed. There will be a post event pizza lunch for all volunteers.
If
you are interested in helping with this Dominican Christmas tradition, please
email Dani Hinsche, director of alumnae/i programs at dhinsche@dom.edu. You may also contact the
Office of Alumnae/i and Parent Relations at ext. 6286.
Peer Educators Table for Women's
Health Awareness

Come cheer for Dominican Soccer!
HELLO DOMINICAN
UNIVERSITY!
This is University Ministry and the L.I.F.E. Team.
We wanted to send out a note congratulating the men's and
women's soccer team on how well they have been playing and wish them luck
on their game this weekend. So, to the entire Dominican community we
want to invite you to both of their games:
The men's soccer team has a huge Central Region match-up this
weekend. They are playing Oshkosh, who managed to knock the Stars out of
the NCAA Division III National Tournament in 2003. The game begins at
1:00 p.m. on Saturday.
The women's soccer team also has a HUGE match-up this
weekend. They are playing Alverno College for their last regular season
game. If they can clinch the win they have a good possibility of hosting
the quarter-final conference tournament right here on campus. This is
something the Stars have not done since joining the NCAA on 2000. Their
game begins at 3:30 this Saturday following the men's team.
So, come out and show your support. Bring your pom-poms and
cheer for these two great teams.
Good Luck!!
T-Shirt Design Contest – Sponsored by
Honors Cultural Chicago Council
The Honors Cultural Chicago Council (part of the Dominican honors program) needs designs by the morning of Wednesday October 26th.
What we need? A T-shirt and a polo design.
On the polo:
We need a logo or crest for "Dominican Honors," "Dominican University Honors," or "Dominican Honors Program" (we leave it up to the designer to word it). We want this to look "preppy" or "Harry Potter-like."
On the T-shirt:
The same logo or crest will be going on the front and we want the back to say "Honors Cultural Chicago Council." We would like some aspect of Chicago incorporated into the back as well. (The skyline, Sears Tower, etc.)
Things to keep in mind: Design something you would like to wear! We would like to keep it to one or two colors, but if you have a fabulous four color design, submit that too. The shirt will be silk screened, and the polo will probably be too, but it may be embroidered.
Prize? A FREE polo and T-shirt with your design on it and seeing your design worn around campus!
Questions? Have a design to submit? Contact Monica, HCCC President, at prusmoni@dom.edu.

War on Families: Mothers in Prison
Event
Please join us for an exciting talk, book signing and discussion with Professor Renny Golden and Wenona Thompson, Director of Girltalk:
War on Families: Mothers in Prison and The Children They Leave Behind
Tuesday October 18, 7 p.m., Lewis Lounge on Dominican’s main campus.
Families often suffer collateral damage in U.S. drug wars. Over 70% of incarcerated women are mothers, primarily serving time for drug-related, non-violent crimes. Renny Golden, a professor of Justice Studies at Northeastern Illinois University for 25 years, is author of "Disposable Children: America's Child Welfare System." Today she will talk about and sign her newly released book War on Families: Mothers in Prison and the Children They Leave Behind (New York: Routledge, 2005). This book presents narratives of mothers and children in their sojourn through the labyrinth of the streets and the state. Please join us for a powerful conversation!
Wenona Thompson is the director of Girltalk, a program for young women in the Cook County Juvenile Detention Center. She has already shared her analysis, poetry, ideas, and experiences with a few lucky Dominican students. Come hear more!
