Introduction

October 31, 2009

You’re best friend, Albert Newton, a real science whiz, just put the finishing touches on a time machine. “Let’s head to the future!” he says. “I bet they’ll have so much cool stuff!”

You both step into the machine, and he pushes the future button. “Year 2100, here we come!” he exclaims as you exchange high fives.

The future was nothing like you’d hoped. The rainforests were gone. Most of your favorite animals were extinct. Countries were fighting wars over the limited remaining resources. It had become so hot by the Equator that masses of people had to leave their homelands.  New York City was underwater after the ice caps melted. And people were starving and suffering more than ever before…

Your glimpse of the future was nothing short of terrifying. From your 7th grade science class, you remember hearing that carbon dioxide emissions were the root cause of global warming. You decide that it is now your responsibility to inform your community about the actions it can take to reduce its carbon footprint and slow down global warming and the destruction of the environment.

Task

Student Objectives:

Students will be able to:

1.    Define what a carbon footprint is.

2.    Inform the public on how to reduce their carbon footprint.

3.    Understand environmental factors that affect the carbon footprint

4.    Bring information together to create a waste management plan.

Your task is to determine what a carbon footprint is and the actions you perform that increases and decreases your carbon footprint score. Based upon your score, you will research ways to lower your carbon footprint in order to reduce the effects of global warming. You will then create a PowerPoint presentation to describe actual actions that you and your community can do to decrease your carbon footprint score. After making your PowerPoint, you will present your findings at the town council meeting.

Process

1.     Each member in your group must take the Carbon Footprint Test.

2.     Record your individual scores and average the scores together on your worksheet.

3.     Before doing any research, write what you think a carbon footprint is and then list 5 things that you think raises your carbon footprint score and 5 things that you think lowers your carbon footprint score. Each member must receive a checkmark on their worksheet before they can move on to the next step.

4.     Break up into the following roles:

a.     Chicago Transit Authority Analyst

b.     Waste Management Organizer

c.      Energy Efficiency Expert

d.     Food and Agriculture Developer

5.     Using the websites provided, research your component of the carbon footprint test. You must be able to answer the following questions.

a.     What are three different categories that falls under your component? For example, The Chicago Transit Authority Analyst knows that there are different forms of transportation, such as cars, trains, and airplanes.

b.     How does each category affect your carbon footprint and the environment? For example, how does traveling with a car affect your carbon footprint? How does train travel affect your carbon footprint? How does flying in an airplane affect your carbon footprint?

c.      What actions can you make to reduce your carbon footprint in each category?

6.     As a group, collaborate to create a PowerPoint presentation about reducing your carbon footprint in your area of expertise. Be sure to look at the PowerPoint Rubric in the Evaluation Section before you begin making the presentation. Your goal will be to present your answers to the questions asked in Step 5. Each starred line (*) in this outline will mean one slide for your presentation. The presentation must have at least 16 slides, which should be arranged as follows:

I.                   Title Page*

II.                 Introduction*

III.              Topic 1: Transportation Analysis

a.     Question 1*

b.     Question 2*

c.      Question 3*

IV.              Topic 2: Waste Management

a.     Question 1*

b.     Question 2*

c.      Question 3*

V.                Topic 3: Energy Efficiency

a.     Question 1*

b.     Question 2*

c.      Question 3*

VI.              Topic 4: Food and Agriculture

a.     Question 1*

b.     Question 2*

c.      Question 3*

VII.           Conclusion*

VIII.         Closing Slide*

See this following PowerPoint Template for an idea of what I want to see. You may use this template and make it your own by changing the slide titles, background, and design.

7.     Present your PowerPoint presentation to the local city council (the rest of the class), explaining ways to reduce our carbon footprint and global warming. Make sure to look at the presentation rubric before your present.

Conclusion

January 1, 2010

After having informed your community about ways to reduce its carbon footprint, Albert persuades you to take another trip to year 2100. Even though you’re worried about what you might see, you end up agreeing to go.

“I can’t believe it!” Albert screams after you get a glimpse at the new world. “The world is beautiful! Rainforests. Lions. NEW YORK CITY! Snow! And the new iPODS!!!”  You turn off your ears as Albert dives into a deep conversation about the new computers software of the future.

Congratulations global warming warrior! You have made a difference!  The fight doesn’t stop here though – energy conservation is a way of life.
