Author Biography for Featured Book



The Invention of Hugo Cabret



Brian Selznick is a Caldecott Honor- winning illustrator and a New York Times bestselling author. He graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design with the hope of becoming a set designer for the theatre. After he spent 3 years selling books and painting windows for a children's bookstore in Manhattan. While there he started creating children's books of his own.

Mr. Selznick does a lot of travel researching his books. He spent six months in Washington D.C. for "Amelia and Eleanor Go for a Ride", and he traveled to England for "The Dinosaurs of Waterhouse Hawkins". Most recently, he visited Walt Whitman's childhood home in West Hills, New York for "Walt Whitman: Words for America".

His books have received many awards including a Caldecott Award for "The Invention of Hugo Cabret", a Caldecott Honor for "The Dinosaurs of Waterhouse Hawkins", and a Robert F. Silbert Honor for "When Marian Sang".
