Our student book club has really taken off this year! Students in 5th through 8th grade pick books to read from the list of 20 chosen for the award. In the springtime, students vote on the favorite book and the winner is announced at a later date. This method of choosing the book winner allows the student to take ownership and have a direct impact on what they feel makes a great book. Our success has given us the opportunity to be invited (2004) to Mayor Daley's annual high school book club meeting and we are hoping to be invited again this year! Check out the official website at http://www.rcyrba.org

Book Club meets every 3 weeks to discuss what we have read. We begin with a snack, then meet together as a whole group for announcements, concerns, etc. Next, we break into small groups to share what we think of the book and bounce opinions off of each other. Finally, we share our recommendations and individually pick out a book to read for the next meeting. We track our reading on the book chart posted in the library which has a list of all the books and participants. This is a fun way to socialize and meet with students who share a love of reading.
